The proposal seeks to reinstate the historic gilding to the six lantern stems of the South, Centre and North Gates within Buckingham Palace’s East Forecourt. The works are limited to the preparation and oil gilding of the foliate leaves, roll mouldings and connecting vertical details of the stems. The proposal arises from discoveries made during the consented restoration of the forecourt railings, piers and gates (25/07846/LBC). Architectural paint research undertaken by Lincoln Conservation in July 2026 confirmed that the first decorative finish to the lantern stems, dating from the 1904 Aston Webb remodelling of the Forecourt, comprised a Bronze Green oil paint with the foliate and roll-moulded details highlighted in gilding. The proposed works will therefore reinstate a documented historic finish rather than introduce a conjectural or new decorative treatment.
