Forest Lane London Borough of Newham E7 9DF
The proposed works include restoring the basic infrastructure of the Park (footpaths, signage and interpretation and street furniture). This also includes enhancing the accessibility of some areas of the park that do not meet current standards in respect of accessibility. The proposed works include creating two new entrances to reinforce the fact that Forest Lane is a public space, as public consultation revealed that many local residents expressed the lack of clear signage and easy to find entrances to welcome people at the Park. Furthermore, the creation of additional footfall in more secluded areas will counter the anti-social behaviour issues that have beset the Park, especially in ‘dead-end’ areas of the Park with no circulation. The proposed works include restoring both water bodies, repairing eroded banks, thinning vegetation and implementing all of the recommendations of the Preliminary Ecological Appraisal in respect of biodiversity enhancements across the Park. The proposed works include replacing or upgrading play and outdoor fitness equipment that has reached the end of its life. The proposed works include commissioning a new artwork to represent the legacy of Lucel Tate, working in partnership with the local community. A new sensory garden with ornamental planting is also proposed, with the opportunity for community gardening and involvement of local people in creating planting plans for different areas. The proposed works include making available the stories of women who gave birth in the former Maternity Hospital or who were members of the Hibiscus Community through 'listening posts' installed in the Park. The proposed works also include recording the evolution of the Site from monastic lands to 19th century workhouse grounds to hospital gardens through interpretation, with particular focus on memorialising the names of the children who died in the 1890 workhouse fire.
